HISTORY |
If you’re interested in the history of the real Fokker Dr.1, I’d recommend you read Tom Cleaver’s thorough preview of the kit available here.
THE KIT |
The story of the Lafeyette Escadrille was the inspiration behind the movie “Flyboys”. As a tie-in to the movie, Eduard has released a series of Limited Edition kits with movie box art, and decals for aircraft form the film. In this case, they have repackaged their very nice Fokker Triplane kit with a set of Flyboys decals.
One of the clichés of the film was that all the Germans flew red triplanes, except for one. This kit lets you build the red triplane of the “chivalrous German”, or the black plane of the “Ruthless German”.
The kit itself is the same plastic as the one already described in the earlier preview. There is no Profipack version of the kit, so no PE is included here.
The instructions are printed on the standard Eduard style. (Eduard now posts their kit instructions on their website) Also included is a separate glossy, full color sheet showing the color and markings for the two planes in the kit.
The black triplane has a lot of white stripes, which would be a challenge to mask and paint, especially for the fan of the film, who may not be a “serious modeler.” So, Eduard has provided all the white stripes as decals, so the modeler can paint the plane black overall.
CONCLUSIONS |
Highly Recommended for fans of the film. This is the same very fine kit already released with historic decals, so there is really no point in buying this one unless you want a plane from the film. (Unless you already have real decals, and this is the only version of the kit the shop has.)
I bought the kit, and the companion Nieuport 17, so that I can add them to my collection of WW1 planes hanging over my desk at work—I’m sure some co-workers will recognize them! I think I’ll build mine as the black truiplane, and then use the leftover decals for the red one, using another Triplane kit from the stash.
