For their next Armor Photogallery book, the SdKfz 142, Stug III ausf D has been chosen. Everything exemplary that I said about the previous book is true for this one. There are photographs of just about every place that you can put a camera. The vehicle in the Swedish Armor Museum was chosen to receive this intense photographic attention and nothing was missed. What I especially like is that in the corner of every page is a highlighted section of a drawing of the vehicle to show you just exactly where the page's photographs are being directed. And it isn't just photographs, but each picture is explained in detail.
Half of the book is used for the photo details. The next section is devoted to scale plans in both 1/72 and 1/35 scale. This is followed by several pages dedicated to the Maybach engine that powered the Stug. The final section is one of historical photographs. These are all chosen to best display the differences between the subtypes. Threaded through the historical photo section is a narrative that provides a short history of the various subtypes from the A to the E. What is common with all of these types is that they used the short barreled 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun. Apparently another issue will cover the long barreled variants. You also are given a chart that lists serials, subtypes, number built and dates.
All in all, this book is the perfect reference for those who really want to detail out a Stug III. Buy it!
