HISTORY

The Dornier Do 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL utility aircraft, manufactured by Dornier GmbH (later DASA Dornier, Fairchild-Dornier) from 1981 until 1998. In 1983, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) bought a production licence and manufactured 125 aircraft for the Asian market sphere. Approximately 270 Do 228 were built at Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany and Kanpur, India. In August 2006, 127 Dornier Do 228 aircraft (all variants) remain in airline service.

In 2009, RUAG started building a Dornier 228 New Generation in Germany with the fuselage, wings and tail unit manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kanpur (India) and transported to Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, where RUAG Aviation carries out aircraft final assembly, customized equipment installation, product conformity inspection and aircraft delivery. It is basically the same aircraft with improved technologies and performances, such as a new five blade propeller, glass cockpit and longer range. The first delivery was made in September 2010.

THE KIT

I got this kit via an on-line auction as I was looking for one to complement a recent decal sheet from Caracal. However, a situation that seems to happen more frequently than usual when buying from auctions is that this one is missing the windscreen. I'll have to see if Revell can help.

Despite a 1988 production date, the kit is basically raised panel lines. My kit shows a little flash, but nothing major. There is a fairly nice cockpit consisting of a floor, two seats rear bulkhead and instrument panel. No control wheels are provided. The nose gear well needs to be installed prior to closing the fuselage halves and finding room for the 10 grams of weight in the nose will be a bit tricky, especially as the usual wheels weight lead source has dried up, thanks to the industry going over to non-malleable iron weights. There is no cabin detail and the kit can be built gear up, though no stand is provided. The window run installs on the inside.

The fuselage center section/wheel well piece is a separate insert with a flat plate on which to attach the landing gear. Wing is a single upper section with left and right lower pieces. The prominent flap actuator housings have the holes for their attachment already drilled. Engine nacelles are each left and right halves that trap a prop shaft. If one does not care about spinning props, these can be installed after painting.

Horizontal stab is an upper and lower piece that slots into the rear of the fuselage. The cockpit transparency is attached from the outside. There are quite a few small antennas and one will need to stretch a bit of sprue for some.

The 15 construction steps are well drawn and unambiguous. The single markings option is for the box art plane with the German Navy in three greys. All the color information is in Revell paint numbers with generic names also provided. Decals are definitely RoG old school. They are quite matte and do include instrument panel decals as well as the small de-icing boots on the props and prop tip markings. The other de-icing boots will need to be painted.
CONCLUSIONS

To my limited knowledge, this is the only kit of this plane in this scale. It must be relatively popular as there have been five other boxings besides this one. I took a short hop from Philadelphia to Newark one year in one of these and was impressed with its flying qualities. It is not a big plane as the cabin seating was just one seat on each side, and it flew pretty low the entire trip. I wish I could remember the airline that operated it as I'd get markings for it.
