I get a number of e-mails that ask why I bother reviewing kits and decal sheets that are no longer readily available. Well, it is basically because these things are all part of our hobby. Sure, I could stick with the newest stuff, but then I'd just be doing the same as everyone else. What's the point in that? Do you always buy the newest kit out there? Are there not times when you seek something that is no longer easily found? MM is a site where you can come to find information on older stuff as well as the brand new. Besides, one thing I've learned is that nothing is completely unavailable. It may take a bit of looking, but you can generally find whatever it is that you seek, regardless its age if you are determined enough.
Back to the decal sheet. This one covers four FM-2 Wildcats, all in overall dark sea blue.
First is a VC-96 plane from the Rudyerd Bay in 1945 with a typical white geometric design of early1945.
From VC-93 aboard the Petrof Bay comes another FM-2 with a cloverleaf geometric design.
'Mah Baby' was flown from the Gambier Bay and has several kills to its credit.
Finally, a Fleet Air Arm Wildcat VI from 794 squadron in 1945. This is in the standard European theater markings.
Until recently, there was no kit of the FM-2 in 1/48. Several conversion sets were made for either the Monogram F4F-4 or the newer Tamiya F4F-4. Then this year (2002), Sword released an FM-2 kit. It has its problems, but does build into an FM-2 right from the box. Whichever route you decide to go, this decal sheet will provide some more options to what is currently available.
