The first really effective Wild Weasel aircraft was the F-105G. All of these were converted from F-105Fs by adding the various homing and jamming pods to the airframe. The 105G was preceded in this mission by 'EF-100F' Super Sabre, and some 'EF-4C' Phantoms as well as earlier modded 'EF-105F' airframes. On the data plate and in official records, the 'E' was never on these planes. It is an affectation that many of us use to denote these early Wild Weasel aircraft. Attrition was just as high for the Wild Weasels as it was for the F-105D with a huge number of them lost in combat. No one said the mission of knocking out SAM sites was easy and often there was a price to pay.

There are five aircraft on this sheet. All of them are F-105Fs. All from the 388 TFW, all tail-coded JE, and all in the standard SEA camouflage scheme except for the last aircraft which has the underside painted in the tan and lighter green; pattern unknown.

First plane is 'Bad Sam' of the 44th TFS. Next is 'Crown 7', also from the 44th. This is followed by 'Porky Pig', again with the 44th. 'Protestor's Protector/My Diane' is another 44 TFS bird. Rounding out the group is 'Whar's Dem Migs??' from the 13th TFS. This is the one with the unusual underside camo. All of these surviving aircraft were later modified to F-105G standard. Each carried their name/artwork on the fuselage under the engine intake.

Currently, there is no 1/48 F-105F kit on the market. Monogram did both the F and G models, though they have not been reissued in many years. Later this year (2002), Revell will be reissuing the F-105G. I have not built either kit, but perhaps the F-105G can be backdated to fulfill the needs of this decal sheet.

Please note that the sheet may look a bit short as I'll often crop off common markings to save on server space.
