The F-84 was originally developed to be a long range escort fighter for the new long range B-36 and other large bombers. When SAC was formed, it was natural that those units whose primary role was bomber escort to be shifted over to SAC control. The F-84, while not particularly the fastest plane around, was perfect for escort duties. They had large, broad wings, which enabled them to stay at the altitudes of the bombers and were nimble enough to knock down the current threats of the late 1940s.

Even while the Korean war was demanding more and more F-84Es and Gs for ground attack duty, there were a large number of aircraft in the States performing the escort role. This sheet has two of those.

First is an F-84G-1 from the 523 FES/27 FEG. from Bergstrom, Texas in mid-1952. This plane is predominantly yellow and has a complete set of data markings, including those for a Mk.7 atomic bomb.

The other aircraft is an F-84G-1 of the 309 FES/31 FEG from Turner AFB in Georgia, also in the mid 1952 time frame. Blue is the predominant color of this squadron. Included are a set of yellow wing tank bands with the words "Fly Safely" on them in place of the normal blue ones.

There is a small sheet with common markings so you can do one of the two planes.

The recommended kit is the Tamiya F-84G. The instructions are as superbly done as the decals themselves, giving much additional information on the differences between the E, G and various subtypes as well as some possible markings anomalies that one might encounter during research.

Overall, I'm quite impressed with the sheet.
