For the Trumpeter MiG-3 |
Apparently sheet one was a good seller so they have decided to do a second sheet on the MiG-3. This one covers five aircraft. The instructions are excellent giving a short history and references for the modeler to verify or add to the information provided. Colors are given with three paint references: one for the superb White Ensign ColorCoat line, one for Gunze and a third for Humbrol. Some of the Gunze and Humbrol colors will need to be mixed, but it does provide a wide choice as some paints may not be available in your area.
First up is White 12 of the an unknown unit. It is painted in overall green upper sides with the usual blue undersides. It has a red trim tab on the rudder and some touch-up work on the upper colors is visible in photographs.
Next is Black 36 of the 126 IAP in a winter scheme of white upper sides and blue under. This one has a bare metal engine cowl and dark metal area behind the exhaust. It also sports a red star on the spinner. The decal sheet provides this in segments to make it easy to apply.
Yellow 27 is in a sort of tiger striped scheme of black-green and green over blue. It has no canopy and a white spinner. This aircraft was with the 7 IAP in defense of Leningrad.
White 44 was in defense of Moscow and is in a pretty standard scheme of black-green/green over blue. Though the nose is shown all in black-green, it may have had a normal pattern. I should also mention that it is quite possible that the black-green could easily have been black. It just goes to show that one cannot always tell from b&w photos.
Finally, White 64 of the 11 IAP is in a green/dark green over blue scheme with a white spinner. The Russians used exhaust gasses routed to the fuel cells as a safety device (it worked quite well) and on this aircraft, the tube leading to the fuel tank is quite visible in photos.
Overall, an excellent sheet that provides even more options for your Trumpeter MiG-3.
