It seems to this old-timer that airshows have gotten boring. That is because I go to them to see military planes, not a bunch of warbirds and aerobatic biplanes, but nice, loud and colorful aircraft. Wasn't that long ago, when an airshow was given, there would be a large number of Phantom II's in attendance, all of them colorfully marked in nice, bright colors. Alas, that is no longer the case. Often a modern airshow only has a smattering of real military aircraft, the rest of the field filled with uninteresting aircraft. Guess that is the price one pays for peace in our time.

The US Marines often had some of the most colorful Phantoms that ever flew and this sheet has a number of them on it. While the instruction sheet recommends the Revell kit for the F-4B and the old Hasegawa kit for the F-4J, there have been a number of much better kits released since this sheet first saw light in the early 1970s. The new Hasegawa and Fujimi kits would probably be the best bet for these decals.

All of these planes are in the gloss gull grey and white scheme.

The first one is an F-4B, the Air Group commanders plane with markings for both VMFA-251 and VMFA-312 on the tail and the DW tail code of VMFA-251.

Next is a VMFA-312 bird in its typically colorful checkers and coded DR.

Two units from Hawaii are next. The red nosed VMFA-235 F-4J is the first of this duo. It includes the white -starred swoosh on the tail. The white stars for the radome are separate.

VMFA-232s red tailed F-4J  with the WT tail code is the final Phantom of the four. Any of them would make for a great model.

There is enough stencil data for one aircraft, and enough Marine markings for three. Insignia will have to come from another source.
