NOTES: |
This is the second new sheet from Wolfpack Decals and for the first time, has some non USAF subjects in the mix. In fact, there are seven subjects on this one so that should make folks pretty happy. Like previous sheets, this one is superbly printed by Fantasy Printshop in the UK and is in perfect register.
So let us get underway on what's with the sheet.
First up is a P-3C from VP-46 in 2006. It is in overall gloss gull grey with the last three of the bu/no on the nose. I was in Diego Garcia when VP-46 was there in 1986. It was during this time, that all tail markings were removed from P-3 aircraft, a sad state of affairs that lasted many years. Nice to see they have returned, albeit smaller than how it used to be.
Next is an EP-3E from VQ-1 or VQ-2. Markings for both planes are provided. These are the later build EP-3Es. When I was with VQ-1 in the early/mid 1970s, our EP-3Es were very early 148xxx and 150xxx bu/no P-3A aircraft (as a note, the EP-3B, which is what these planes were originally designated, had the Aries I system). These are later 156xxx and 157xxx airframes based on early P-3C airframes. As mentioned in the nice write-up, these planes' mission is SigInt (Signal Intelligence). The interior of the plane is full of broad-band RF receivers and recorders. I'm sure the old reel-less tape recorders have been replaced by more modern DVD recorders, but one never knows about the military. I'm surprised that an Aries III system hasn't been developed by now, but perhaps the continual modification of current systems has made a whole new electronics suite unnecessary.
Next is an SU-15TM in the markings of the plane that shot down KAL flight 007 in 1983.
A TA-7L from VAQ-34 is the next option. This is in overall FS 36375, and most planes had a very ratty appearance due to frequent touch-ups.
An overall black C-119L is next as assigned to 130 SOS, West Virginia ANG in 1971.
The F-16C+ is from the 170 FS, Illinois ANG, a unit that will cease to exist in September of this year (2008). Base closure means its planes will be sent to the 163 FS, Indiana ANG at Fort Wayne. This aircraft is a 'big mouth' block 30 airframe with updated electronics systems.
Finally, another A-10 from the 355 FW. This time it is with the 357 FS. Both high and low visibility badges are provided as the plane carried both at one time or another.
Typical with Wolfpack Decals is an extensive historical background on each aircraft that includes color information and when appropriate, various load-outs.
For some of the aircraft on the sheet, the insignia and data markings will have to come from the kit decals or another sheet. This sheet is very crisply printed by Fantasy Printshop in the UK with the markings in perfect register.
