Luftflotte 3 |
Here is the fourth and perhaps last of several new sheets from Xtradecal celebrating the 70th anniversary of D-day. This one concentrates on Luftwaffe which, while it had negligible impact on the event, was there. These are all options from Luftflotte 3, which had control of the units in northern France at this time. In common with the previous sheets, this one has a ton of options. In fact, it is easier for me to provide a link to Hannants so you can see them all.
We are provided unique markings and insignia for eight different aircraft. All of the data markings will need to come from the kit decals or other sources. Unless noted, all the fighters are in RLM 74/75/76 while the bombers are in RLM 70/71/65. Here is what is included:
Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6 WkNr 530120 Black <-+- Oberleutnant Pips Priller CO JG26 Lille; Fw 190A-8 WkNr 3317 Black <<-+- Major Kurt Buhligen CO JG 2 Creil. This plane has a unique upper surface pattern in RLM 71/02.
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 WkNr 166224 White 10 2.JG.3. This aircraft has an Erla Haube canopy; Bf 109G-6 U-2 WkNr 412951 White 16 yellow under nose and red tail band Lt Horst Prenzel Staffelcapitan 1.JG.301. This aircraft has the taller fin and rudder;Bf109G-6 Black Chevron and Bars possibly flown by II Gruppen Adjutant Oberleutnant Max Bruno Fischer of Stab II./JG3.
Junkers Ju 188A JE+HK 2/KG.6 Melsbroek, Belgium. This aircraft has most of the upper surfaces painted in large RLM 76 patches except for the left wing, which is obviously replacement. Black undersides.
Junkers Ju 88A-4 3E+S 8./KG.6 Melum-Villaroche. This aircraft has the upper surface painted with what looks like hundreds of RLM 76 spots.
Heinkel He 111-22 with Fiesler Fi 103/V1 5K+GA Stab/KG.6 Beauvais. As a V-1 carrier, the underside is painted black with a variegated upper surface pattern of RLM 76 painted over the standard camo.
Once again, there are no kits specified for any of the markings, but by their nature, they should fit pretty much any appropriate kit. One will have to also locate some aftermarket bits for a couple of the 109s. Instructions are very well done with not only profiles, but also upper and lower views with notes pertaining to some of the more interesting camouflage schemes. My thanks to Hannants for the review sheet.
