NOTES: | Resin and vacuformed conversion for ICM kit |
You may recall a few weeks back, I mentioned that many of the molds of Kiwi Resins had been purchased by Black Robin Resinz. Many of those molds were conversion sets and they were kind enough to provide this one on the Spitfire XII for review. The most accurate Spit kit in 1/48 is still the ICM version and that is to be the donor kit for the majority of the airframe.
The Black Robin Resinz set is very nicely molded, with only a few air bubbles noticed on the wheels and prop blade. The large engine casting is very well done as really are all the castings. With all due respect to Kiwi Resins, one of their biggest areas of concern was that their parts were generally rife with pinholes or other casting glitches. This is a huge improvement in that area.
The set contains two complete Falcon vacuformed canopies, a resin engine, new spinner, new prop blades, new control stick, wheels, exhaust, Coffman starter bulge, exhaust, seat, and an oil cooler. In addition, if you wish, you can remove the panel on the wing that has the old oil cooler and replace it with one that is provided by Black Robin. The set also contains code and serial decals for two planes. I'm thinking that only 43 and 91 squadron flew these planes as not many were actually built.
I'm pleased with this set and I'm sure you will be too. I've got a spare ICM Spit just for this one.
