HISTORY |
THE KIT |
I'm not sure which number this is of the Essex class carriers that Trumpeter has done, but I'd have to say at least the fourth. I would imagine that they will continue to do the whole class and that is just fine with me and many other modelers.
Trumpeter has done s superb job on these ships, providing a wealth of detail at a most reasonable price. When you think of it, with 523 parts, it has to be the best parts to pennies ratio of just about any kit on the market. As with the others, this can be built either as a waterline or a full hull kit and will measure 15" in length when finished.
In common with the others in this series, you get a one piece hull with a full hangar deck. This is as much for strength as anything for there is little detail on this deck aside from some tie downs. The kit is built from the hull up and so the sections with the various hangar bay doors is next. These doors are separate so if you so wish, you can add bits of detailing in the hangar deck. There are also the usual plethora of sponsons and AA guns to install on this section.
The flight deck is a single piece with separate elevators. Again, most will build these up as there is no hangar bay detailing to be seen. Many more AA guns and their mount areas are located along the flight deck. The final pieces are for the island structure with its rows of guns and the large directors for the deck mounted 5 inchers.
You get a nice air wing of sorts with Hellcats, Helldivers and Avengers. For those wanting a waterline model, the kit includes a superbly done vacuformed sea surface. Conversely, the full hull folks get a nice display base with name tag.
A full color painting guide, complete with instructions on the Measure 33/10a paint scheme is included. This also has details for doing the aircraft. A decal sheet with the various hull numbers and flight deck markings is also part of the package. Paint information is provided in Gunze and generic titles.
CONCLUSIONS |
This is another superb carrier kit from Trumpeter. If you have seen any of these built, you know how super they are. They also provide excellent value for the money and should provide many hours of enjoyable construction.
