Hi, I’m Tony Hodun, and this is one of five tables of
Hasegawa 1/48 kit listings I’ve developed to aid you as a modeler or collector
in finding the right kit to build the version you want, to fill the gaps in your
collection, or to find the parts you need.
This page covers U.S./British WW II Aircraft.
It also includes the complete explanation of these tables.
If you’ve got input, please contact me at
hodunmisinec@gmail.com; please
be patient, I’ll reply when I am able. Enjoy, and happy modeling/collecting!
And my thanks to Scott for allowing me to post these on Modeling Madness!
Tony Hodun
THE KIT TABLES
Welcome to my summary of Hasegawa 1/48 aircraft kit boxings!
Hasegawa is known as one of the top kit manufacturers in terms of fit and
finish of their kits, and produces a wide range of aircraft subjects in this
scale. Hasegawa is the leader in re-boxings or alternate boxings of their
aircraft kits, often with different decals, but sometimes with different parts.
Hasegawa has issued over 900 1/48 aircraft kits to date.
I began developing this list to have a way to keep track of which
versions were in which kit boxes. In
some cases you can save money getting a lower priced reissue if you don’t care
what kit decals are included; in other cases, you must get a particular kit to
get the right parts to do a certain version.
A few kits even contain parts to build versions not shown on the box art.
My “favorite” example is the three P-47 Thunderbolt boxings which include
a Hamilton-Standard prop, but don’t have wing pylons (why not!?!).
These tables will always be a work in progress, so check back regularly.
The intent of these tables is to list all kits in a family
by number and description and include an explanation of the similarities or
differences between boxings. The focus is on the parts included, not the decals.
I can always use quality input to the tables, particularly the Fast Jets
table. However, this means you will
have to open the box to verify which parts trees are present.
Hasegawa sometimes includes older instructions but the latest revisions
of parts trees, so the instructions don’t tell the accurate story.
If you do provide input, I need a list of the parts trees and any resin,
metal or etched parts with a brief description of each, and the full name on the
kit end panel. Or tell me what kit
number you have, and I’ll respond with the data to determine what is really in
that box. See the notes below on
parts tree labeling for assistance.
The kit numbers in the ‘NEED INFO’ section are the kits that remain to be
researched.
One other choice I have made is to focus on Hasegawa tooled
kits with only a few exceptions. As of January 2004 the tables now include Pro
Modeler and Revell
My thanks to repeat contributors Mike Franklin, Juan Carlos
Alberto Gómez y Sarzotti, Mike Vorrasi,
and Woody Yeung, and to Bruce Archer, Mark Atrill, Pablo Bauleo, Jim Bonanni,

Voigt, and Woody Yeung for their helpful input!
Parts Tree Labeling Notes:
A – Hasegawa uses a capital letter to designate each
different parts tree, always molded on a tab on the tree and noted on the
instructions, except for a few of the earliest kits.
b – Hasegawa uses a subletter to designate similar trees
that can be produced in two or more variations using inserts (e.g. Jb is the
A6M2-N fuselage tree, the two fuselage halves are modified but tree is otherwise
identical to tree Ja, the A6M2/3 fuselage tree). The subletter is always molded
on a tab on the tree, but may or may not be noted in the instructions.
A* - occasionally Hasegawa reuses a letter for two or more
different parts trees in the same kit family, or modifes a parts tree without
using a subletter. The star (*) is
my own way of noting differences between these trees (e.g, there are three
different A trees in the A6M Zero family).
The star is never found on the parts tree or instruction sheet!

07324, 09092, and 09777 build the early P-400/Airacobra Mk.
I version. 09738 is similar and also
includes later exhaust stacks so the kit builds a P-400 or a P-39D.
09093 builds a later P-39Q or N with a
three bladed propeller and under wing cannon found on some P-39Q production
blocks. 09758 is similar to 09093 but lacks the under wing cannon and related
wing parts. 09974 is based on 09093, excludes the three-bladed prop and poly
caps, includes early exhausts (rather than late ones), and also includes resin
and metal parts for the racing version’s propeller, ventral air scoop, and pitot
tube.

09086, 09702, 09789, and 52104 build a standard P-40E.
09635 is similar, but also includes inserts for two guns per wing and
builds an early Kittyhawk Mk I or a Mk Ia.
09659 and 09753 are similar to the P-40E kit, but have the broader chord
tail found on early P-40Ks and include later ejector exhausts instead of the
earlier ones. 07319 is based on
09659/09753 but with a long aft fuselage rather than a short one.
09966 includes the parts to build a P-40E or a broad chord tailed early
P-40K. 09678 and identical 09843
build a P-40M and also the identical Block 1 P-40N.
09715 includes the parts to build either a P-40K or a P-40M.
09088, 09732, 09740, 09769, and identical 09924 build a P-40N with the
final canopy design which covers from Block 5 to Block 40, the end of
construction.

P-47Ds 09140, 09257, 09519,
09598, and 52605 are identical earlier bubbletops with bombs and pylons, and
both types of Curtiss Electric paddle blade props (asymmetric and symmetric);
these can build a D-26/28/30 without or without dorsal fillet.
09141, 09305, 09477 and 09564 are similar to 09140 but also include
etched dive flaps for later D-30/40 versions.
09193 has etched dive flaps but has only the asymmetric C-E paddle blade
prop. 09190, 09241, and 09250 are
identical bubbletops with Hamilton Standard prop only (to build a D-25/27), but
no wing pylons (!), so beware, now you know.
09968 is identical to 09190/09241/09250 and
does include the wing pylons (finally!).
P-47Ms 09549 and 09572 are based on 09140 and include revised crankcase
engine parts from F4U-5/7 kit; 09572 is almost identical to 09549, but includes
a resin late P-47N style fin fillet.
Razorbacks:
09057, 09541, 09615, and 09716 are
identical razorbacks with early Curtiss prop and asymmetric Curtiss paddle blade
prop. 09058 and identical 09404
razorbacks have earlier straight edged cowl flaps only, no wing pylons, and only
the early Curtiss prop. 09302 is
like 09057 but lacks the paddle blade prop.
09318 is like 09057 but also includes the earlier cowl flaps.
NEED INFO: 51028

Almost every one of the thirty-seven boxings to date is
identical, and each includes canopies and props to build either a P-51D or P-51K
plus a generous supply of stores.
The exceptions are 09350 with extra metal prop blades, antenna, and clipped
wingtips (modeler must cut off wingtips), 09362 and
09550 with extra metal prop blades, 51030 with KMC resin details,
and 09377 with resin wingtip ramjets (modeler must cut off wingtips).
The two “Early Version” boxings, 51558 and 52603, don’t have any
different parts but simply show modeler where to remove the fin fillet!
09688 also includes one decal version for
a P-51D with no fin fillet and provides directions to remove the fin fillet
accordingly.

2 resin pieces, SBD-1 cowl intake |
Dive brake perforations are molded solid, can be drilled
out by modeler, there are aftermarket sets with detailed dive brakes for the
kits that do not come with them.
09119 SBD-3 is basic kit, has later twin .30 cal MGs.
Similar 09169 and 09430 also include etched detailed dive brakes.
09625 is based on these and includes resin earlier SBD-1 carburetor
intake, modeler must remove the later one from the cowl.
09953 is identical to 09625 and also includes the land based tail wheel.
09120 has H-S prop, does SBD-4 only. 09835 is an identical SBD-4 which
also includes the etched dive brakes.
09179 is noteworthy, includes same parts as SBD-3 except has the larger
pneumatic tail wheel for land based use (but no carrier tail wheel), the only
source of this tail wheel in 1/48, used on many later Marine SBDs based on
Pacific islands. However, the A-24A was based on the SBD-4 which had H-S prop,
so either the kit is wrong or props were changed on some A-24As, my references
are no help on this one…does anyone have any additional data?

There are 22 differently lettered plastic trees in this
series plus 4 different resin or metal add-on sets, so it pays to have a road
map to know what’s in the kit when building different versions!
The beauty of all this complexity is one can do almost every version of
the Hurricane, you only need to go elsewhere if you want to do the earliest
fabric winged, two-bladed prop, unarmored windshield Hurricanes.

Mark II/IV: 09051,
09264, and Revell Germany 4571 build the basic Mk IIc, which has a later Rotol
larger pointed spinner/metal bladed prop, ejector exhausts and both types of 20
mm cannon barrels (sadly, no 44 gallon drop tanks).
09967 is the standard Mk IIc plus a set of metal six stack ejector
exhausts. 51026 is basically 09051 with KMC resin details.
09252 and 09544 are basic Mk IIc with a Trop filter included.
09274 Sea Hurri IIc is basic Mk IIc and includes resin A-frame arrestor
hook and catapult spools and requires surgery on aft lower fuselage.
09052 Mk IId includes 40 mm cannon pods and Trop filter, but does not
include the 20 mm cannon barrels.
09347 Mk IV is identical to 09052, also includes the armored radiator (resin),
but not the regular one, and has a pair of 250 lb bombs with pylons.
09066 Mk IIb differs most in that it has the 8 gun metal wing (which can
be drilled out to make a 12 gun wing, you’ll need to provide 4 blast tubes), has
a Jablo wooden prop with same later Rotol spinner, but no metal prop, and also
includes Trop filter and 250 lb bombs with pylons. 09510 differs from 09066 in
that it lacks the Trop filter, bombs, and pylons, but includes the Rotol later
metal prop, the Mk I nose and radiator, Rolls Royce ejector exhausts, Mk I tail
wheel, and the Jablo 11’9” prop.
Mark I (later): The basic Hurricane Mk I family differs
from the Mk II series in that all kits come with the shorter early forward
fuselage, 8 gun (12 gun capable) metal covered wing, Rolls Royce ejector
exhausts, and different propellers.
09065, 09453,
09470, and 09609 are basic Mk Is and have the earlier rounded Rotol
spinner with metal prop blades.
09494 is identical to these but
also includes a pair of metal 6-stack ejector exhausts.
Identical 09323, 09592, and 09682 have a Trop filter (different than the
Mk II Trop filter) and the early De Havilland smaller pointed spinner with
3-blade metal prop. 09391 is
identical to 09323 except it lacks the Trop filter.
09366 Sea Hurri Ia has the De Havilland prop/spinner plus a 3 blade Rotol
metal prop, and resin catapult spools (correct) and A-frame arrestor hook which
requires fuselage surgery (which the Sea Hurricane Ia did not have, but allows
you to build this kit as a Sea Hurri Ib).
09562 is complex in that it can build a Mk. I or a Mk. II
with MG equipped metal wings. It includes both Mk. I and Mk. II noses,
radiators, Trop filters, and tail wheels, also has Rolls Royce and standard
ejector exhausts, a De Havilland 10’9” prop and spinner, and a Jablo 11’9” prop
used with the later longer spinner.

Most boxings are identical and build the Spitfire Mk Vb
version with regular or clipped wingtips.
Exceptions are 09105, 09405 and 09571 which include a Vokes Tropical
filter, 07309 which is based on 09105 and includes resin parts to build a
Seafire Mk. Ib, some fuselage cutting is required, 07334 and 09106 which both
include extended wingtips, four bladed prop, and fuselage details for the high
altitude Mk. VI, and 09107 and identical 52602 which include two different
Aboukir Trop filters and locally clipped wingtips. The Gartex kits are based on
the Mk Vb or Mk VI kit with added details. GA6 is basically Mk.VI kit
09106 with resin and metal parts to do the floatplane version.
GA7 and identical GA8 are basically kit 09105 with resin and metal bulges
and cannon barrels to do a Mk. Vc, requires removing the Vb bulges and filling
areas/panel lines.

07301, 09079, 09081, 09436, 09457, 09473, 09485, 09722, and
RG 04554 are identical, and include options for wheels, wingtips, stabilizers,
and rudder. Some filling and filing is required to revise ailerons for Mk. VIII
and the Mk VII. 07321 and 09408 include the same parts as the Mk VIII and Mk IX
boxings plus two more trees with extended wingtips, air intake, non-armored
windscreen, and other details, both build a quasi Mk VII.
The Mk VII has a different canopy and dorsal fuselage area behind the
cockpit then is found in the kit, these changes are not included, so the kit
approximates the Mk VII; you can find articles explaining how to correct this in
print or on the internet. 09424,
09506, and 09656 are identical to 09079/09081 but also include the ‘e’ wing
cannon bay covers. 09587 is identical to 09079/09081 and also includes the
extended wingtips parts tree. 09630
is identical to 09079/09081 and also includes the extended wingtips parts tree
and the ‘E’ wing cannon bay covers.
09533 builds an early Mk. IXc, comes with early horizontal stabilizers (only),
early smaller carburetor intake, and early wider bulge wing cannon covers.
09555 is an excellent value which deserves special mention.
This boxing includes parts and decals to do two different Mk. IX’s flown
by RAF ace and leader Johnny Johnson.
The kit includes every parts tree in the Mk VII/VIII/IX family except
Tree N, the windscreen with left side access panel.
It also includes a beer barrel so you can model his famous post D-Day
cross-Channel sortie! The kit
includes early & late horizontal stabilizers, early and late rudders, early and
late carburetor intakes, tubular or ejector exhausts, regular, clipped, or
extended wingtips, 3 spoke, 4 spoke, or flat covered wheels, fixed or retracting
tail wheels, and cannon bay covers for early type ‘C’, later type ‘C’, or ‘E’
wings. It can be built as a
approximate Mk. VII with standard windscreen, Mk. VIII (with suitable aileron
modifications for the Mk VII and MK VIII) with any wingtip type, and various
early and late Mk. IXc or Mk IXe airframes with whatever features are required,
and you will have plenty of spares with which to modify your other Hasegawa
Spitfires!

The family includes three nice variations of this big
fighter bomber. This is one of the
few Hasegawa kits using inserts; the same fuselage is used to do car door or
bubbletop versions via inserts, which can be hard to fit.
Experienced modelers’ advice is to glue each insert to the respective
fuselage half first.
09059, 09283, and 09548 are identical kits for early or
late “car door” Typhoons with 500 lb Bombs.
51040 is identical to 09059/09283 with inclusion of a
Jaguar detail set that includes resin and etch cockpit w/film instruments, resin
radiator, wheels and both types of exhausts. 09978 is identical and also
includes resin Tempest tailplanes and a resin radiator with dust filter.
09060 builds a later “bubbletop” Typhoon with a three blade
prop and rockets. 09311, 09379, and
09464 are “bubbletops” with a four blade prop (only), bombs, and rockets.
09862 is a bubbletop kit which includes
both types of propellers, rockets, and 500 lb bombs.
